Meeting a solicitor for the first time can feel daunting, particularly if you’ve been injured or are dealing with a dispute that has disrupted your daily life. One of the questions we’re often asked is surprisingly simple:
“What should I bring with me?”
The good news is that you don’t need to have every document perfectly organised before your first appointment. Your solicitor will guide you through what information is important and explain what happens next. However, bringing a few key documents can help make the meeting as productive as possible.
If your enquiry relates to a personal injury or compensation claim, it can be helpful to bring:
- Any letters or emails relating to the incident.
- Photographs of the accident scene or your injuries, if available.
- Medical records or hospital correspondence you have received.
- Details of any treatment or rehabilitation.
- Insurance details, where relevant.
- Contact details for any witnesses.
- Invoices, receipts or details of any financial loss relating to your claim.
- Notes of what happened while events are still fresh in your mind.
- A list of any questions you would like to ask.
- Personal financial information if Legal Aid may be available.
If your appointment relates to a criminal matter, it can also be helpful to bring any correspondence, charge sheets or other documents you have received from the PSNI, the Public Prosecution Service or another investigating authority.
Don’t worry if you don’t have all of this information. The purpose of the first meeting is to understand your circumstances and identify what further information may be needed.
Paul Sweeney, Head of Civil Litigation, says: “Many clients worry that they won’t have the right paperwork or that they’ve forgotten something important. The first appointment is about listening to your account, understanding what has happened and explaining your options clearly. We’ll tell you what information we need and help you gather it if necessary.”
The first meeting is also your opportunity to ask questions. You may want to understand whether you have a claim, what the legal process involves, how long the case might take or whether there are likely to be any costs. No question is too small if it helps you feel more confident about what happens next.
At MSM Law, we believe the first appointment should leave you feeling clearer than when you arrived. Our role is to listen carefully, explain your options in straightforward language and help you understand the next steps.
If you’ve been injured or are considering making a compensation claim, obtaining legal advice early can help you protect your position and make informed decisions from the outset.
